What this is — and what it is not
This is not a ranking of hospital quality, and it is not an audit of Chinese hospitals. We have no authority to certify anyone's clinical outcomes or accreditation status, and we are not going to imply we do.
Every figure below is a statement about our own directory — what we cover, how it is distributed, and how we classify it. That is something we can speak to with certainty. Where a row cites a hospital's position, it reproduces a ranking someone else published or carries a descriptive note from our own records; it is never a judgement we produced.
We are an independent coordination service. We take no commission from any hospital, which is the only reason an open description of this directory is worth reading.
Finding 1 — Most of what we cover sits in three cities
Of the 57 hospitals in our directory, 68% sit in Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou, and the remaining 9 cities hold the rest between them. This describes our coverage, not China's healthcare system — but it is also a warning about us: if your search starts and ends with Beijing, you are looking at a narrower slice than we actually cover.
Finding 2 — Cancer is the deepest specialty in our directory
This counts the specialty tags we assigned to each hospital; comprehensive hospitals that carry no specialty tag are excluded from these figures. It says what our directory is built around, not what China does best:
Cancer-related specialties appear on 13 of 57 hospitals — ahead of every other group, and a third more than cardiology in second place. That matches what we see in practice: oncology is the single most common reason international patients contact us.
Finding 3 — The same few centres keep coming up
This is a statement about our own referral logic, not about quality. It is the raw output of what our condition shortlists actually recommend, aggregated:
| Hospital | City | Appears in our shortlists for |
|---|---|---|
| Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center | Shanghai | 7 of 21 conditions |
| Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center | Guangzhou | 7 of 21 conditions |
| Cancer Hospital, CAMS | Beijing | 6 of 21 conditions |
| Zhongshan Hospital (Shanghai) | Shanghai | 5 of 21 conditions |
| Huashan Hospital | Shanghai | 4 of 21 conditions |
| Peking University Third Hospital | Beijing | 4 of 21 conditions |
| Tiantan Hospital | Beijing | 4 of 21 conditions |
| Anzhen Hospital | Beijing | 3 of 21 conditions |
| Fu Wai Hospital | Beijing | 3 of 21 conditions |
| Fudan University Women's Hospital (Red House) | Shanghai | 3 of 21 conditions |
Two cancer centres top the list. If you are researching a cancer diagnosis, the practical shortlist in China is shorter than you might expect — which is useful to know before you start emailing hospitals.
What we deliberately leave out
This is the part of the report we would ask you to judge us on. Three fields that international patients care about most are absent from both this page and the CSV, because we cannot stand behind them:
Accreditation status (JCI and similar). We hold notes on which hospitals have been accredited internationally, gathered from the open web when this directory was assembled. Those notes are not a verified accreditation register, most have not been re-checked in months, and accreditation in China lapses. Publishing "no" beside a named hospital would be asserting a fact about that hospital which we cannot support. The field is out until it is sourced row by row against the accrediting body's own directory.
Clinical outcomes. Success rates, infection rates, complication rates, survival data. We have no reliable source for these in China and will not approximate them. Be sceptical of anyone comparing Chinese hospitals on outcomes without showing where the numbers came from — they usually came from marketing.
Surgeon-level data. Volume per surgeon, training, published results. This is the level at which a real decision is made and the level at which public data essentially does not exist.
We would rather publish a short list of things we can defend than a long list we cannot. If you are writing about medical travel to China, please hold other sources to the same question: where did this number come from, and when was it last checked?

Selection. The directory covers 57 hospitals across 12 cities. Inclusion requires national Grade 3A designation — China's highest hospital tier — plus a national specialty ranking or an international department listed by the hospital itself. All 57 hospitals in the table are Grade 3A by design; it is an entry filter, not a differentiator.
Fields and provenance. Name, city, district, position, specialties and website were recorded from each hospital's own site and from published national rankings. The position column is our record of a hospital's standing: where a published national ranking covers that specialty we reproduce its rank, and where it does not we carry a short descriptive note instead. Neither is a judgement we made. Record dates run from 2026-04-06 to 2026-09-20, and each row carries its own date, because a directory assembled over months is not uniformly fresh. Where an older date sits beside a fact you are relying on, treat it as a lead to check rather than a settled answer.
What this edition does not attempt. Clinical outcomes, surgeon-level data and accreditation status — see the section above for why. We would rather be visibly incomplete than quietly wrong.
Corrections. If a hospital's position or details have changed — or if you are a hospital and any row here is wrong — write to contact@chinahospitalsguide.com and we will correct and re-date the row. We would rather publish a correction than carry a stale claim.
