WeChat Pay & Alipay with a Foreign Card
China is largely cashless. The single most useful thing you can do before arriving is link your international Visa, Mastercard, or JCB card to WeChat Pay and Alipay. Both apps now support foreign cards and convert charges into your own currency.
- Open WeChat → Me → Pay (or "Wallet") → Cards → add your international card.
- Open Alipay → Account → Bank Cards → add the same or a second card.
- Verify identity with your passport when prompted (a one-time step).
- At the hospital cashier, scan the QR code with either app and pay.
Note: international cards may carry a small fee (around 3%) for larger transactions. Hospitals are large merchants, so your card is reliably accepted — it is smaller street vendors that sometimes are not.
Cash (Chinese Yuan / RMB)
Every hospital cashier accepts cash in Chinese yuan. If you prefer cash, plan to withdraw RMB from a bank ATM (Bank of China, ICBC, and others accept most foreign cards) or exchange currency at an airport counter or bank branch.

Chinese hospitals run on a pay-as-you-go model, which is different from the "receive a bill later" model many patients are used to:
- Deposit at admission: you pay an upfront deposit when you register or are admitted.
- Charges accrue: consultation, tests, procedure, bed, and medication are billed as you go.
- Settlement at discharge: you pay the balance (or receive a refund) at the end.
- Itemized invoices: you receive itemized receipts — keep these, they are what your insurer needs for reimbursement.
